NZ HERALD CANVAS MAGAZINE
It was friends who'd moved down country 20 years before and returned to the French Cafe for their wedding anniversary who proclaimed: "It was still brilliant, even better than before." So we decided it was time to see for ourselves how Auckland's poshest place was doing in these days of celebrity cooks and the tasting-plate frenzy.

Here's how to feel like a VIP for the night. Trust me, there's no need to hire a helicopter to transport you to a luxury lodge. And don't even think of enlisting a PR company to organise your own "exclusive" party, complete with a guest list of 300 strangers. It's much simpler than that. Phone The French Cafe and book in for dinner.

Service makes the meal. At The French Café, the large and impeccably trained staff get every little thing right, over and over, and at the same time each of them establishes a warm relationship for the evening with each of their customers. This is the gold standard.

Review by Nici Wickes
Would you believe that I first visited the French Cafe more than 25 years ago? My mother had discovered this "new place" in Symonds St. Behind the unassuming shopfront lay a world of food and fashionable people we didn't know existed. Goodness knows where we found the money, but eating there became a bit of a habit for a year or two.

The French Café is not perfect. There, I’ve said it. But it’s a measure of its quality that regular diners – and it has many – will very likely take exception to my claim. Excellent
